Location Kufr Aqab/ Jerusalem
Type of incident Notification of housing demolition
Date of incident 14 September 2017

Enas J. was surprised to find Israeli police at her door on the morning of 14 September 2017. They tookmeasurements of her building and then told her that it is to be demolished. Enas is living with the insecurity of not knowing when they will come to take her house from her and her children.

“My name is Enas and I am a 33 year old housewife. I am married with four children, the oldest is Dania (14 y.o.) and the youngest is Ahmad (3 y.o.). We live in a detached house on the fourth floor in Kufr Aqab.

“On 14 September 2017 I heard a knock on the front door. My husband answered it and we were shocked to see Israeli policemen and the president of the Kufr Aqab municipality standing there.

“The municipality president told us that the policemen were going to take measurements of the building to prepare to demolish it.

“The Israeli police took two hours to take all the measurements and then left.

“On 1 October 2017 my husband and other residents of the building went to file complaints at the court in Jerusalem.

“On 22 October 2017 the police returned to inform us we have one week to evacuate the building or they will demolish it over our heads.

“My husband does not have a Jerusalem I.D. so we cannot live there together. We have spent all of our money on this house and I fear that we will be left to live on the streets.

“The police told us that our building is not licensed and so it is illegal, but Israel refuses to issue licenses to buildings in this neighborhood.

“I often cry over this injustice that is happening to us. I do not want to be separated from my children but this might happen.
