WCLAC plays a leading role in Ms. Dubravka Šimonović, UN special rapporteur on violence against women, visit to Palestine: WCLAC has provided Ms. Šimonović, UN special rapporteur on violence against women, with an in depth overview into Palestinian women's reality during her official visit to the Palestinian Territories. On 17 September, WCLAC facilitated her visit to its emergency shelter and introduced her to its rehabilitation procedures, including social and legal assistance under the National Referral System for women victims of gender based violence. Ms. Šimonović was then received at WCLAC’s office on the 19th of September in the Old City of Hebron where she directly heard the personal stories of women and girls facing daily harassment and violations of their rights by the Israeli military occupation and Israeli settlers, such as students and teachers from Qurduba School.  She also listened to testimonies from women victims of gender based violence and legal discrimination in family status laws and policies. On the same day, a meeting was held in partnership with women's civil society organizations in Ramallah/West Bank and another meeting with human rights and women's organizations in occupied East Jerusalem, to focus on the combined weight the occupation and the patriarchal society have on Palestinian women's lives. Ms. Šimonović was given first-hand information on the direct and indirect impact of the Israeli systematic policies on the daily lives of Palestinian women in the occupied Palestinian territory. CSOs also discussed that the deep problem in the oPt is the Israeli military occupation. Additionally, participants discussed the joint efforts made towards combatting gender-based violence in the Palestinian Territories such as the enhancement of the National Referral System and the recent adoption the National Action plan on the implementation of the UNSCR 1325. While calling for accountability of the occupying forces, UN special Rapporteur reminded the State of Palestine's responsibility to transpose its accession to international conventions through urgent legal reforms. Read more`
